Liu Jianping, Chief Physician of Endocrinology Department of No.2 Hospital Affiliated to Nanchang University Won Jiangxi Natural Science Awa

Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government held provincial scientific and technical award conference in Nanchang on July 25, and a batch of scientific and technical workers and units that have made outstanding contributions to scientific and technical progress and economic and social development of our province were commended. Liu Jianping, Chief Physician of Endocrinology Department of No.2 Hospital Affiliated to Nanchang University Won Jiangxi Natural Science Award the Third Scientific Prize.

The awarded project of Chief Physician Liu Jianping was: research on non-GMO induced hepatocyte’s transdifferentiation into insulin secretion. Main research contents as: research on inducing in vitro rat liver epithelioid stem cell WB-F344 cell (WB cell) as insulin secretion cell (IPCs) with small molecule compound three-step approach, and observing whether induced precursor cell implanted into rat with diabetes will be further induced and differentiated as IPCs, and conducting appraisal and functional assessment on induced IPCs in vitro and vivo. Its scientific value is that induction with small molecule compound is a new approach for hepatocyte sourced insulin to secrete cell and brings new flush of dawn to cell treatment on diabetes.

   At present, secretory cell producing insulin mostly applies exogenous virus infection gene transduction method, induction process is of complexity, induction time is long with low efficiency, and there is risk of resulting in tumor. In research of the subject, inducing liver stem cell’s transdifferentiation as insulin secretary cell with small molecule compound in non-GMO method has fair effect with that of GMO approach, but inducing time is short with high selectivity and relatively completes functions, and there exists no risk of tumor.

Such subject research result has been published on Scientific Reports, sub-publication of Nature in 2013, recommended as methodology by Nature Publication Group for exchange as well, and already been cited by others for over 20 times; it is an initiative fundamental research of non-GMO gene curing diabetes and further provides solid theoretical basis for clinical application of stem cell curing diabetes in future.
