Recently, Dr. Peng Honggen from the Industrial Catalysis Department of the School of Chemistry published his research results in the chemistry and chemical engineering journal“Angewandte Chemie International Edition”(Journal Impact Factor: 11.994) entitled “Confined Ultrathin Pd-Ce Nanowires with Outstanding Moisture-and SO2- Tolerance in Methane Combustion”, which has achieved the breakthrough in the publication of the chemical engineering research results on top-level chemical engineering journal of our university.

Methane is an important greenhouse gas, whose greenhouse effect is 20 to 25 times to that of carbon dioxide. Therefore, it is very important to purify methane emitted in various environments. Based on the problem of low temperature purification of methane in exhaust gas when liquefied natural gas is used as fuel, the paper used the strong interaction between metal-oxide carriers and the confinement effect of silica shell and designed a new type of high-efficient catalytic purification material that realizes the low temperature of methane. The catalytic material uses a highly complex ultrafine palladium-ceria nanowire as its core and a porous silica as the shell layer, which exhibits excellent activity, high temperature thermal stability, water resistance and anti-sulfur poisoning performance in catalyzing and purifying methane from natural vehicle exhaust gas. The paper was completed by Dr. Peng Honggen, a young faculty member of the Industrial Catalysis Institute, together with a postgraduate student named Rao Cheng under the guidance of Professor Dai Sheng of the American Oak Ridge National Laboratory/Tennessee University and Mr Zhang Pengfei, member of National Young overseas high-level talents introduction plan from Shanghai Jiaotong University. NCU is the first author unit. The research work was supported by the National Key Research and Development Program, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the Jiangxi Provincial Outstanding Youth Talent Funding Program.

The industrial catalytic discipline of NCU is a high-level key discipline in Jiangxi Province. In recent years, we have vigorously introduced young doctors, created a relaxed research atmosphere, built a good research platform and encouraged young teachers to conduct overseas exchange. We have obtained a series of important research results, which were successively published in top chemistry and chemical engineering journals such as “Chemistry of Materials”, “Small”, “Chemical Communications”, “Journal of Materials Chemistry A”, “Applied Catalysis B: Environmental”, “Chemical Engineering Journal, ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces” and so on. At the same time, NCU has strengthened the cooperation with enterprises. Many research results have been successfully applied in industrial production, which symbolizes a good momentum in the development of industrial catalytic discipline.
