The project group of Professor Chen Yiwang achieved important progress in ultrathin-metal-layer-based indium-free transparent electrodes

Recently, the project team of Professor Chen Yiwang cooperated with the project team of Thomas Riedl from University of Wuppertal and successfully prepared the perovskite solar energy battery based on the  indium-free transparent electrodes; the results were published on the most influential journal in the field of materials: Advanced Materials (DOI: 10.1002/adma.201606656), whose impact factor in 2016 was 18.960, and the first author Sheng Huting, a doctoral student guided by Professor Chen Yiwang.

The semi-transparent and soft and effective perovskite solar battery constantly draw wide attention from the industrial peers, and transparent electrode of a high electroconductibility becomes the focus of study. The investigators carefully studied the changes of interface energy level of three kinds of different stannic oxide (SnOx) as the electronic transmission layers, and designed the SnOx /Ag /SnOx smokeless transparent electrodes with sandwich structures. Stannic oxide cannot only serve as an effective electronic transmission layer but also the protective layer of ultrathin metallic silver (7 nanoparticles); it can additionally effectively block the corrosion of the precursor solution from the upper layer of perovskite. This transparent electrode has a square resistance of 11Ω/sq, equivalent to the commercially available indium tin oxide (ITO). In addition, this smokeless transparent electrode is prepared at a relatively low temperature. The use of the valuable metallic indium is abanboned, and it has more marketing advantages when compared with the ITO electrode prepared at a high temperature. The perovskite solar energy battery based on the indium-free transparent electrodes has an efficiency of up to 11%. The research results provide an effective solution to the corrosion that compromises the perovskite battery on the basis of ultrathin-metal-layer electrode.

The project group lead by Chen Yiwang carried out a systematic study by long focusing on the organic and perovskite solar battery, mainly covering the smokeless transparent electrode, water / alcohol soluble boundary layer, active layer interface stability and device printing and processing. This project team carried out a wide cooperation with international authoritative project teams. For example, the project team of Professor Thomas Riedl carried out a profound study and cooperation by focusing on the stability of perovskite solar energy battery and the application of nanoparticle burnishing to perovskite, and they jointly published a series of articles of perovskite solar energy batteries, including Nature Communications 7, 13938 (2017); Adv. Mater. 29, 1605003 (2017) and Adv. Energy Mater. 7, 1602599 (2017).
