Organized by the Chinese Communist Youth League (CCYL) Central Committee, the China University Robot Competition (ROBOCON) began in 2002 and has become the most technically challenging and influential robot competition for college students in China. The theme of this year’s competition is “Tou Hu Xing Shang (completing the precise arrow throwing in a specific time)”, and a total of 79 teams from the top universities and colleges in China participated in the competition. After three days of fierce competition, 16 first prizes and several second and third prizes were awarded.

In the competition, the NCU robot team fought hard and performed well. In the preliminaries, the team won all four games to advance to the top 32, and in the group stage, the team won all three games against three universities including Harbin Institute of Technology to advance to the top 16. Finally, the team won the National First Prize with the 12th place.

“The team members overcame many unimaginable difficulties in order to perform well in this competition. The team members of the fourth year who have graduated even gave up their summer vacation to stay on campus to support and prepare for the competition, setting an example for future team members.” said Cai Jianbing, a team member of Grade 2017 majoring in Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation.

NCU robot team is made up of more than 20 undergraduates from various schools and majors. After more than 300 days and nights, using the knowledge and technology of mechanics, electronics, control, vision and artificial intelligence, the team designed and manufactured two robots completely independently, and successfully realized the fully and precisely automated arrow throwing with the robots.

The NCU robot team was founded in 2005 by Mr. Liu Guoping, the first “Model of Moral Education” of the university. Mr. Liu Guoping has led undergraduate students to carry out science and technology innovation and entrepreneurial activities outside the classroom, and has been awarded as “Excellent Mentor” and “National 10,000 Excellent Innovation and Entrepreneurship Mentor” in the China University Robot Competition many times. Since the establishment of the team, it has been awarded the title of “Xiaoping Science and Technology Innovation Team” (for undergraduates only) by the CCYL Central Committee and the All-China Students’ Federation. Meanwhile, with the continuous exploration and efforts of the teachers and team members, the innovation and entrepreneurship platform of “Helping Each Other” and “Passing on the Fire” has been formed.
