Champion! A Student from NCU Confucius Institute Won the Global Championship of the 14th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition



Recently, the final of the 14th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary Students was successfully held online by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education. Lucía García Díaz (Chinese name: Guang Jie), a student from NCU Confucius Institute at the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, with her solid fundamentals of Chinese Language, fluent Chinese expression and good cultural literacy, entered the global top 30, won the championship of the European division, and finally won the global championship among more than 70,000 contestants from 83 divisions in 76 countries around the world.


Guang Jie, a Spanish girl, has been interested in the Chinese language and culture since her childhood. In April 2017, the NCU Confucius Institute at the University of Castilla-La Mancha was officially inaugurated in Spain, and Guang Jie was enrolled as one of its students of the first batch. Starting from Chinese Pinyin and strokes of Chinese characters, Guang Jie has been learning the Chinese language since then. In addition to Chinese language courses, she has also taken courses such as calligraphy and Chinese painting inaugurated by the Confucius Institute and various culture presentation and exchange activities. As Guang Jie said, Learning Chinese has helped me open another door in my life.


Chinese Bridge series of Chinese language proficiency competitions are the popular flagship events that Chinese learners from all over the world are highly concerned about and actively participate in, covering various aspects of competition including Chinese language proficiency, conditions of China, fundamentals of Chinese culture, Chinese cultural skills, etc, and evaluating the contestants integrated Chinese language proficiency. This years finals received extensive attention from CCTV News, Chinanews.com, QQ.com and other media, and the global champion Guang Jie was interviewed by Peoples Daily Overseas Edition.


It is learned that Chinese Bridge has reached its 20th anniversary this year. Over the past 20 years, more than 1.5 million young people from more than 160 countries have participated in the Chinese Bridge competitions. The ties among young people from different countries and ethic groups were established due to Chinese language, and a bridge of language, culture, friendship and soul was built. In the future, Chinese Bridge will continue to walk hand in hand with young people from five continents and go on a new journey together.
