Concentrating on Medicine for Forty Years, Making Contributions to Epidemic Prevention and Control

Professor Hu Ke

On March 10, General Secretary Xi Jinping went to Wuhan City of Huben Province to investigate the epidemic prevention and control work and personally have an interview with 10 representatives of medical staff. Professor Hu Ke, NCU alumnus of class 1980, Director of No.2 Department of Respiratory Medicine and Critical Illness of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, was one of the three representatives of local medical staff in Hubei Province cordially met by the General Secretary. He was awarded National Advanced Individual for Epidemic Prevention and Control of Health System.

Born in 1965, Professor Hu Ke was admitted to the Department of Clinical Medicine of Jiangxi Medical College from Xinyu, Jiangxi when he was just 15 years-old in 1980, who was the youngest in the class.According to classmates’ memory, he studied very hard and chose to further study after graduation, and obtained Master’s Degree in Hubei Medical University and Doctor’s Degree in Wuhan University. He is now a Professor, Chief Physician, Doctoral Candidate Supervisor and Director of No.2 Department of Respiratory Medicine and Critical Illness of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University.

Prof. Hu Ke in College Days

Over the years, Professor Hu Ke has been engaging in the clinical and scientific research work of diseases of respiratory system, with major research orientation of Sleep apnea disorder and pulmonary infectious disease. Among the sudden respiratory public health events in Hubei Province, such as SARS 17 years ago, human infection with avian influenza, and COVID-19 in this year, Professor Hu Ke always works in the front line of disease prevention and control, and has acted as Leader and Deputy Leader of Medical Expert Group for several times in recent years.

At the end of 2019, Department of Respiratory Medicine and Critical Illness of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University successively received some patients suffering from viral pneumonia with unknown origin, and the symptoms were totally different from the common pneumonia. Professor Hu Ke was acutely aware of the severity, and rapidly reported to the hospital. The hospital also made response in the first place, and established isolation ward.

Thereafter, Hubei Province established a provincial medical group, and Professor Hu Ke acted as Deputy Leader of Expert Group.

From then on, Professor Hu Ke has become one of the busiest people in the hospital. Over the past two months, he went out early and came back at dusk, went to three towns in Wuhan, rushed to all the COVID-19 designated hospitals like Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, Wuhan Union Hospital, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, Hubei Provincial Hospital of Integrated Chinese & Western Medicine, Hankou Hospital, Wuchang Hospital, Lung Hospital, and etc., and participated in the COVID-19 screening, diagnosis and treatment work in Wuhan City. On one occasion, he went to 6 hospitals in one night for group consultation.

East Branch of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University became one of the third batch of COVID-19 designated hospitals newly established in Wuhan City on January 25, and was determined by National Health Commission as a designated hospital for receiving and treatment severe patients getting COVID-19 on February 4, setting up 800 beds for severe patients. Professor Hu Ke voluntarily requested to the most dangerous frontline where he was mostly needed, and entered No.11 Inpatient Area for COVID-19 in East Branch of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University.

At this special moment of nationwide epidemic prevention and control, Professor Hu Ke became everyones stability anchor. Everyone hoped to ask Professor Hu Ke to watch the X-ray film and check the diagnosis and treatment plan. He took on the responsibility with the Organizations, colleagues and patients affirmation and trust to fight in the front line of fighting the epidemic, and made every effort to helping the patients.

On February 25, Secretary of Hubei Provincial Party Committee Ying Yong convened the experts of the comprehensive expert group for COVID-19 prevention and control for discussion, and Professor Hu Ke became one of 20 members invited to the discussion. Meanwhile, as one of 8 experts making speeches, he put forward suggestions on the prevention and control of COVID-19 and disease treatment. Besides, Professor Hu Ke participated in the formulation and revision of Conventional Diagnosis and Treatment of COVID-19, participated in the provincial and municipal emergency sci-tech projects for COVID-19, and put forward professional suggestions for stopping the epidemic spread and improving curative rate. As an Associate Editor-in-chief, he wrote Prevention Manual for COVID-19, playing an important role in effectively improving social prevention ability.

Professor Hu Ke has been concentrating on clinical and scientific research work for forty years, following the Alma Mater’s educating traditional of “Noble Ethics and Excellent Medical Skills”, and practicing the doctors’ spirit with practical action in “respecting life, healing the wounded and rescuing the dying, being dedicated with great love”. For decades, he has been keeping “excellent medical skills, rigorous style, treating people sincerely and low profile”. We also believe that among the outstanding alumnus graduated from Nanchang University for the past hundred years, there are numerous warriors in white with noble ethics and excellent medical skills like Professor Hu Ke, with both a benevolent mind and heart, and they will definitely unite like a fortress to defeat the outbreak.
