Arrhythmia is one of the common diseases in human’s body. Malignant arrhythmia is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death. It has some genetic characteristics thus family members may be at risk, and limited treatment method has worsened the situation. Therefore, early screening and detection of arrhythmogenic genes can be used for early diagnosis and prevention of such diseases, thereby greatly reducing the risk of death of family members.
Recently, Professor Hong Kui and his team from Department of Cardiology of Second Affiliated Hospital of NCU, discovered the first p. Q1283H mutation in ZU5C domain of ankyrin-B (encoded by ANK2 gene) in a-type ventricular tachycardia patient of malignant arrhythmia, which was confirmed to be involved in ventricular tachycardia. They also explored the molecular genetic mechanism of the pathogenesis and found that the antiarrhythmic drug like metoprolol or flecainide can effectively inhibit the occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias in knock-in mice, and also provided an important theoretical basis for abnormal genetic diagnosis and individualized treatment. The results of the research have recently been published in the top journal Circulation in the field of cardiovascular disease research (2017 impact factor is 18.88), which marks the recognition from worldwide experts in this field to the Department of Cardiology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University.
In addition, Professor Molher. P from the United States and Dr. Wang Chao from the School of Life Sciences of the University of Science and Technology of China gave technical support and assistance to the completion of this project. Besides, the subject also received guidance from the Professor Wang HS of the University of Cincinnati who is also the guest professor at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University.
