The latest research achievement participated in by Research Fellow Shen Linfang and Professor Deng Xiaohua of Nanchang University, Breaking Lorentz reciprocity to overcome the time-bandwidth limit in physics and engineering, was published in Science in June 23, 2017 (DOI: 10.1126/science.aam6662).

Resonator cavity and wave guide devices are widely present in various kinds of physical and engineering systems that support light wave, electric wave and sound wave. Various kinds of products such as mobile phones, television sets, and lasers for optic communications in our daily life need massive harmonic oscillators and wave guides. These systems are considered to be limited to one basic limit, namely: the dump energy time of resonator cavity is reversely proportional to its band width. The law of limit in time - bandwidth product has been never been challenged since its proposal over one hundred years ago.

    The Dong Xiaohua Team of Institute of Space Science and Technology of Nanchang University cooperates with University of Ottawa and Zhejiang University, and this limit in time - band width has been broken through by using the mixed resonant cavity / wave guide system (see Fig. 2) of magneto-optic containing materials.  In the asymmetric (time) system they study, the band width is no longer limited to the energy storage time. The traditional time - band width limit is even enlarged by 1000 times; theoretically speaking, there is basically no upper limit in these (time) asymmetric systems. The break-through in resonance system time - band width limit will bring profound impacts on the multiple fields of physics and engineering, and its potential prospect in application is very widely, including communications, optical detection, energy collection and information storage. It can be predicted that, massive principle-based new devices and systems will emerge as the times require.

    Science is an academic journal published by American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and it is one of the most authoritative academic journals all over the world. Science is one of the peer review journals for the publishing of the best original research papers and the overview and analysis of the current research and scientific strategies. This journal was created by Edison in 1880 by investing a fund of USD 10,000, and in 1894 it became the official public publication of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American largest science group.  51 numbers were issued all year round; as a weekly journal, it has a global size of issue of over 1.5 million.
