Hu Xin: Going to the dream place

      Editor’s note: On November 30, the 10th National Congress of the Chinese Literary and Art Association and the 9th National Congress of the Chinese Writers Association opened at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, General Secretary Xi Jinping delivered an important speech at the opening ceremony. General Secretary Xi Jinping standing in the overall situation of the party and the country, standing on the historical height of the national revival, standing in the clear position of the party and the people, profoundly discussed the the important position and unique role of literature and art in the current history, further pointed out the right development direction of literature and art.

      As the writer representatives, our school teacher Hu Xin and Yuan Ping attended the meeting. After listening to the speech of General Secretary Xi Jinping, they are highly encouraged and have deep sentiment. Today, we pick professor Hu Xin’s experience in this meeting for you as follows:

      In Beijing's early winter, golden ginkgo leaves fell down and made you feel warm. General Secretary Xi brings another spring for literature and art with his thought and artistic speech.

      The speech pointed out that we must strengthen the cultural self-confidence, inspire the national spirit with the arts, adhere to serve the people, praise people with positive literature, be brave to promote cultural innovation and development with superb art, stick to artistic ideals and direct people to follow noble literature and art.

    “Art is the horn of era development, representing an era’s style and features most, leading an era’s fashion”, “without the prosperity of Chinese culture, there is no great rejuvenation of Chinese nation”, “achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is the greatest dream since modern times”. Contemporary writers should learn patriotism from our traditional culture, should have sense of responsibility and the ambition of “setting the heart for heaven and earth”.

      Time and space are important for us. Cultural Jiangxi is the source of our Jiangxi writers’ spirit. I was born in Ruijin, growed up in Ganzhou, studied in Nanchang, stayed in Jingdezhen for 11 years after graduation from university, and then went back to Nanchang again. Walking thousands of miles, I still stay in the arms of Jiangxi. Thirty-three years ago, I won the National Outstanding Short Story Award with the debutFourForty-year-oldWoman, the story started from Jingdezhen and ended in Nanchang; my full-length novelRoseRain andGathering Sand, medium-length novelMy Wet Nurse andRed Earth Footprints connect Nanchang and southern Jiangxi, history and reality, words and screen pictures;China’s Talking (Recalling China),Jingdezhen, the Porcelain Capital,Love for Jiangxi Rivers andPorcelain World told the story of white soil of Jiangdezhen. Red land of southern Jiangxi, white soil of Jingdezhen and ancient city Nanchang are not only our creation basis, but also our cultural advantages. Regional characteristics, cultural accumulation and time features should be reflected in the words and pictures.

      After graduation from university, I have been teaching for 47 years. Although I don’t dare to say that I impart knowledge and educate people, I have always been diligent and striven to have a clear conscience; my literary creation is amateurish, but I have endeavored for 33 years and published 39 books, some of them were translated into English and Japanese, adapted into movies and television plays, which is the result of my love for literature and art and the burning of my life.

      Once Liu Qing told Lu Yao: it takes one day from Mausoleum of Yellow Emperor to Yan'an, and then to the hometown of Li Zicheng and Genghis Khan tomb. Living in such a great land, we natives of north of Shanxi should write two or three great works about this land or we are sorry to history.

      In that way, if we Jiangxi writers should copy and rewrite the motto adaptively: by virtue of expressways that extended in all directions, it takes only one day from Wannian, the place found the first stean in human history, to Jingdezhen, the millennial porcelain capital, and then to the first place of army flag rising, revolutionary base area building and Soviet regime establishing. Living in such a great land, we natives of Jiangxi should write two or three great works about this land or we are sorry to history.

      The fortune and vein of literature is interlinked with the fortune and vein of nation. Looking back upon our history and meeting the world, I believe that a new literary age that has a number of high quality works will appear at last. Based on rich history and culture, we should write good Chinese stories with thoughtful soul in artistic way.

      Goethe said: “If a writer wants to have a majestic writing style, he must have a majestic personality first”. I totally agree with it, although I am over 70 years old, I still cherish high aspirations.

Hu Xin: Formerly known as Hu Qing, a native of Nanchang, Jiangxi, the director of Nanchang University Film & Television Arts Research Center, the member of Chinese Writers Association. She began to publish works since 1983, her debutFour Forty-year-old Woman won the National Outstanding Short Story Award. Up to now, she has published 39 books, many of them have been adapted into films and television plays. Since 1992, she has been enjoying the Jiangxi provincial special government allowance. Since 1994, she has been enjoying the special government allowances of the State Council.
