Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor Visits NCU and Interacts with Students and Faculties

On April 12, Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the fifth-term Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR),visited Nanchang University (NCU), delivered a keynote speech at Qianhu Campus and interacted with students and faculties. Zhu Hong, former member of the Standing Committee of the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee, former vice governor of Jiangxi Province, and president of Jiangxi Culture and Tourism Research and Promotion Association, Luo Sihai, SecretaryoftheCPC Committee of NCU, Chen Yeguang, President of NCU and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Fu Weizhong, an alumnus of NCU, President of Sino United Publishing (Holdings) Limited, and Honorary Chairman of Hong Kong Publishing Federation, attended the event.

Luo Sihai and Chen Yeguang expressed warm welcome to Mrs. Lam's visit, introduced the achievements of NCU’s reform and development in recent years, and reviewed the exchange and cooperation between NCU and Hong Kong, hoping to further strengthen exchange and cooperation between the two sides in education, technology, culture, and other fields, so as to inject more impetus into the high-quality development of NCU and Hong Kong.

Mrs. Lam expressed her gratitude to NCU for its warm reception and the conveniencesoffered to HK students pursuing education at NCU. Through this visit, she hoped to strengthen exchanges between Jiangxi and Hong Kong, and further promote cooperationsbetweenNCU and universities in Hong Kong in areas such as disciplinary construction, talent cultivation, scientific research, and academic exchanges.

Along with her delegation, Mrs. Lam also visited the History Museum, the Orchid Garden and the Museum of NCU to learn about NCU’s centennial development and education characteristics. She watched students’ paintings and tea art performances, observed Jiangxi Opera classes, and learned Jiangxi Opera with great interest to appreciate the beauty of fine traditional Chinese culture.

In the afternoon, Mrs. Lam delivered a keynote speech on the topic of “The Practice of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ in Hong Kong from the Report to 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the Spirit of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference” and interacted with students and faculty members on site. The event was hosted by Luo Sihai. Zhang Jiqin, Deputy Minister of the United Front Work Department of Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the CPC and Director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the People's Government of Jiangxi Province, Hu Zhiyang, Deputy Director of the Office of Foreign Affairs of the People's Government of Jiangxi Province, Xiong Liting, a member the of Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the CPPCC and the President of the Hong Kong Alumni Association of NCU, and Tu Zongcai and Chen Shifa, Vice Presidents of NCU attended the event.

Based on the Report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, as well as the spirit of the NPC and the CPPCC, Mrs. Lampresenteda vivid picture of practicing “One Country, Two Systems” in Hong Kong, recounted the changes in Hong Kong over the past century, and shared her experiences during her tenure as the Chief Executive of the HKSAR, providing teachers and students with a vivid education lesson on national conditions. She stated that “One Country, Two Systems” is a great initiative of socialism with Chinese characteristicsand the best institutional arrangement for Hong Kong to maintain long-term prosperity and stability. With the support of the central government, Hong Kong is embarking on a new journey of prosperity. Hong Kong should seize opportunities toembrace the world, leverage its unique advantages to enhance economic momentum, develop new industries, and expand the connection with international community and the mainland, so as tostrengthen Hong Kong's role as a hub. Meanwhile, Mrs. Lam also introduced multiple talent programs implemented by the government of Hong Kong SAR, hoping that more peoplewill study, work, andsucceedin Hong Kong.

"What are your suggestions for working in Hong Kong?" "How can we promote the exchange and integration of different cultures?" "How can we cultivate students with an open international perspective?"…Mrs. Lam interacted with students and faculty members and answered their questions patiently, creating a vibrantatmosphere.
