Respiratory Department of No.1 Hospital Affiliated to Nanchang University Completed the First 3D Printing Template Lung Cancer Particle Impl

After performing particle implantation under guidance of CT, Respiratory Department Team of No.1 Affiliated Hospital has made consistent efforts to cooperate with Isotope Room and Image Department and completed the first 3D printing template lung cancer particle implantation of our university on August 3 successfully.

The patient, Uncle Li at the advanced age of 85 has been diagnosed as squamous cell lung carcinoma accompanied with pleural effusion for over a month, suffered chest distress and dyspnea, and had been in a poor situation. In consideration of age and physical condition of the patient, Physician Xu Fei, Deputy Director of Respiratory Department determined to conduct particle implantation upon lung focus of patient with consent from family member. To achieve a more accurate treatment, such operation has firstly introduced 3D printing template technology.

3D printing individual template inputs positioned medical image data of each patient before operation to 3D close range TPS treatment plan system, and customizes individualized non coplanar template. Clinical Physician and Physical Therapist designed TPS plan precisely before operation, which ensured complete avoidance of blood vessel, sclerotin, intestinal canal and other endangered organs under the premise of distribution of target section dose, achieved high conformity between TPS plan before operation and execution during operation, realized accurate penetration, reset and implantation, enabled dosimetry quality under strict guarantee. The operation of patient lasted only for an hour, Physician Xu Fei implanted 64 particles for him in total, with particles in even distribution, the operation course went well, and postoperation TPS verification after was almost identical with that before operation.

“Before the use of 3D template, the doctor judged location of focus via multiple CT scannings layer by layer, duration of operation was long and accuracy was subject to certain influence, and there was a large risk of complication during operation.” said Physician Xu Fei. Since 3D printing technology has been used, with accurate positioning and even implantation density, operation period and occurrence of patient pain and complication have been reduced. Currently, the patient after operation is in further recovery.
