Academic Lecture from Professor Sun Baoguo, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President

(State Key Laboratory of Food Science and Technology) Recently, Professor Sun Baoguo, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Beijing Technology and Business University, was invited to give an academic lecture titled "The History, Culture, and Health of National Liquor" at Nanchang University (NCU). The lecture was chaired by Professor Xie Mingyong, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Food Science and Technology at NCU and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Over a hundred teachers and students attended the lecture.

Professor Sun began by discussing the history of national liquor, raising the question "Who created alcohol?" which piqued the interest of the audience. Then, he introduced the development of rice wine, yellow wine, and baijiu (Chinese spirit) in chronological order and vividly illustrated the functions of wine in daily life from the perspective of the analysis of Chinese characters. He further stated that baijiu and yellow wine are China's national liquors. Moreover, he discussed the relationship between wine and health based on ancient records, as well as introduced the progress his team has made in their research of baijiu. He pointed out the functions of baijiu in antioxidation, inflammation reduction, fatigue reduction, immune enhancement, blood lipid and blood sugar regulation, and intestinal protection. Finally, he kindly suggested to the audience that moderate drinking benefits health.

Professor Sun humorously explained the relationship between baijiu and health through the stories of Chinese character creation and other anecdotes. In a lively atmosphere, he engaged in discussions with the teachers and students present, analyzing and exploring the development history and culture of baijiu.
