From December 7 to 9, the 2nd Meeting of the First Technical Committee of the Ministry of Education’s Engineering Research Center for Watershed Carbon Neutrality and the 2024 Annual Academic Conference on Watershed Carbon Neutrality, organized by Nanchang University (NCU) and co-hosted by the NCU Engineering Research Center for Watershed Carbon Neutrality, the School of Resources and Environment, the School of Engineering and Construction, and the School of Architecture and Design, was successfully held in Nanchang.
Before the conference, Provincial Governor Ye Jianchun met with the representatives of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) delegation attending the event. He expressed his gratitude for the guidance and support the academicians have provided to Jiangxi, and hoped that they would leverage their respective strengths to offer further guidance on research and the application of watershed carbon neutrality in Jiangxi, as well as provide more insightful advice for the construction of a modern industrial system in Jiangxi. Academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, including Hao Jiming, Hu Chunhong, Niu Xinqiang, He Chuan, Li Xinggang, Yin Yueping, Zeng Bin, and Zhou Chuangbing, attended the meeting.The meeting was also attended by Xu Yanbin, Secretary General of the Provincial Government; Ning Quan, Deputy Secretary General of the Provincial Government and Director of the Research Office; Wu Yongming, Director of the Provincial Department of Education; Song Bin, Director of the Provincial Department of Natural Resources; Luo Sihai, Secretary of the Party Committee of NCU; and Cai Yong, Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Water Resources.
Zhou Chuangbing, Director of the Ministry of Education's Engineering Research Center for Watershed Carbon Neutrality and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, presided over the opening ceremony. He introduced the development history of the Center and the goals of this annual conference. Chen Yeguang, President of NCU and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered the opening address. He emphasized that the university will continue to strongly support the construction and development of the Center, in order to better contribute to the achievement of both national and local dual-carbon strategic goals.
The annual conference focuses on three main research areas: the natural carbon cycle and ecological regulation of watersheds, the social carbon cycle and metabolic optimization of watersheds, and key technologies and system integration for carbon neutrality. The conference has hosted academic exchanges on scientific issues and key technologies in four technical fields: conjugated soil and habitat construction, water-carbon coupling and pollution reduction with carbon reduction, ecological carbon sink enhancement and value realization, and zero-carbon technology and digital twin. The conference aims to explore frontier fields of the discipline, promote technological innovation and engineering practices in the dual-carbon field, and contribute to the construction of ecological civilization and the high-quality development of the national and local economies and societies.
At the conference, Academicians Zhang Jianyun, Hu Chunhong, Niu Xinqiang, Yin Yueping, and Professor Zhang Limin delivered keynote speeches on the following topics: 'Climate Change and Mitigation Responses,' 'The Connotations, Approaches, and Accounting of Soil and Water Conservation Carbon Sinks,' 'Reflections on the Construction of the Poyang Lake Water Conservancy Hub,' 'Research on Geological Disasters and Engineering Risk Mitigation under Extreme Climate Change,' and 'Climate Change-Driven Landslide Disaster Chains on the Tibetan Plateau.' Academicians Kang Shaozhong, Li Xinggang, Zeng Bin, and Professor Liu Yaolin respectively chaired the sessions.
The conference also organized four themed sub-forums: 'Conjugated Soil and Habitat Creation,' 'Microalgae Carbon Neutrality,' 'Industrial Carbon Neutrality,' and 'Ecological Carbon Sinks.' Over 20 experts and scholars delivered presentations on these topics, offering the attendees an academic feast.
The successful holding of this annual conference will further promote the development and application of fundamental theories, cutting-edge technologies, and key equipment in the field of watershed carbon neutrality. It will also enhance the academic influence of Nanchang University in the field of watershed carbon neutrality research.
