An Exploration of Statistics and Data Science
Lecturer: Chen Songxi
Professor Chen Songxi, an Academician Chen Songxi of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) currently serves as Xinghua Chair Professor, Dean of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Science (IIDS), and Chair Professor in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Tsinghua University. Beyond his academic appointments, he holds prominent national leadership roles: Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC); Leader of the Ministry of Education’s Pilot Program for Undergraduate Education and Teaching Reform in the Fundamental Discipline of Statistics (the “101 Program”); Chairman of the Probability and Statistics Society of the Chinese Mathematical Society; and Vice Chairman of the China Statistical Society (CSS).
Professor Chen has long been dedicated to interdisciplinary research spanning ultra-high-dimensional big data statistical analysis, environmental statistics, and mathematical geophysics. Anchoring his work in national air pollution prevention and control priorities, he has delivered pioneering interdisciplinary breakthroughs in mathematical geophysics—breakthroughs that provide rigorous scientific methodologies for precisely quantifying pollution emissions and evaluating the efficacy of air quality management strategies. Professor Chen has also developed innovative hypothesis testing frameworks for ultra-high-dimensional mean vectors, covariance matrices, and regression coefficients, leveraging U-statistics and L₂-norm regularization to ensure robust Type I error control in ultra-high-dimensional scenarios. His scholarly contributions are exceptionally prolific: to date, he has published 135 peer-reviewed papers, boasting a Web of Science H-index of 36 and cumulative citations exceeding 5,000. His distinguished achievements include the 2017 First-Class Natural Science Award from the Ministry of Education (in recognition of his research on Hypothesis Testing Methods for Ultra-High-Dimensional Data). Additionally, he has been consistently ranked among the World’s Top 2% Scientists since 2020 and serves on the editorial boards of premier academic journals such as The Annals of Statistics.
