Insights and Reflections on Pursuing High-Quality Basic Medical Research
Lecturer: Gao Tianming
Gao Tianming, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), is a distinguished Professor at the School of Basic Medical Sciences, Southern Medical University. He holds the esteemed title of National High-End Talent and serves in key academic advisory roles, including Member of the Academic Advisory Committee of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Member of the Academic Division of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, and Member of the Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. In addition to these national-level appointments, he leads two pivotal research platforms: Director of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Center for Brain Science and Brain-Inspired Research, and Director of the Key Laboratory of Mental Health Research of the Ministry of Education. He also contributes his expertise to top-tier academic publishing as Associate Editor of Pharmacological Research (Pharmacol Res) and Neuroscience Bulletin (Neurosci Bull).
Professor Gao has dedicated his career to pioneering basic and translational research in antidepressant/anxiolytic therapies. His research portfolio is marked by leadership in major national and ministerial projects, including key programs and major grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Innovation Team Projects and Rolling Projects of the Ministry of Education, as well as projects under the 973 Program. His groundbreaking contributions to medical science have been widely recognized: as the first corresponding contributor, he has been awarded 2 Second Prizes of the National Natural Science Award and 3 First Prizes of Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Awards. His seminal work has been published in internationally renowned journals such as Nature Medicine (Nat Med), Nature Neuroscience (Nat Neurosci), Neuron, and Nature Cancer (Nat Cancer). Equally notable is his mentorship legacy: among the doctoral students he has supervised, four have been recognized as National High-End Talents, three have been included in the National Ten-Thousand Talents Program, three have been recognized as Guangdong Provincial High-End Talents, one has received the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award, and five have won the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) or Guangdong Province.
