Philosophy Postdoctoral Research Station

1. Brief Introduction:

The Philosophy Postdoctoral Research Station at Nanchang University was established in 2023. This station draws upon platforms including the Department of Philosophy of the School of Humanities, the Jiangyou Philosophy Research Center of Nanchang University in Jiangxi Province, and the Nanchang University Center for the Study of Neo-Confucianism. The Department of Philosophy at Nanchang University traces its origins to the former Department of Philosophy at Jiangxi University. With a history of over 70 years since it began enrolling undergraduate philosophy majors in 1958, the department has achieved significant milestones through continuous advancement. It has cultivated distinguished scholars such as Professor Zhang Xinguo, a national-level talent. The department began admitting students to its master's program in Chinese Philosophy in 1984, obtained authorization for a first-level discipline master's degree program in 2006, and gained approval for a first-level discipline doctoral degree program in 2018. In 2021, its philosophy undergraduate program was selected for the national first-class undergraduate program initiative. In 2023, it secured approval for a postdoctoral research station in philosophy, which stands as a leading center in Central China for research in Neo-Confucianism, phenomenology and German classical philosophy, normative ethics, and Jiangxi religious studies.

The department has a comprehensive disciplinary structure and possesses a sound academic framework. Currently, it recruits and trains master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral candidates across five disciplines: Marxist Philosophy, Chinese Philosophy, Foreign Philosophy, Ethics, and Religious Studies. While fostering development across all disciplines, it places particular emphasis on strengthening its advantages in Chinese Philosophy, Foreign Philosophy, and Ethics. Faculty development has gained strong momentum since the authorization of its doctoral program. The department has 38 full-time faculty members, including 1 national-level talent, 11 professors (among whom 4 hold senior distinguished titles), 11 associate professors, and 16 lecturers. Faculty members are recruited from prestigious institutions worldwide, including Tsinghua University and Peking University in China; Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and Freie Universität Berlin in Germany; Northwestern University in the United States; Tohoku University in Japan; and Korea University in South Korea. The department continues to see an annual increase in its number of discipline leaders and academic pioneers. Furthermore, the department hosts well-established platforms. These include the Jiangyou Philosophy Research Center, a key research base for humanities and social sciences at Jiangxi universities, as well as several research institutes, including the Institute of Philosophy, the Institute of Morality and Religion, the Institute of Xiong Shili’s New Confucianism, and the Institute of Korean Culture. The secretariat of the Jiangxi Provincial Philosophy Society is also located within the department. In 2021, Nanchang University established the “Neo-Confucianism Study Center” and launched the academic journal Studies on Neo-Confucianism in 2025. Many professors hold academic positions such as vice presidents or executive council members in national first-level academic societies. The department actively engages in academic exchanges and has cultivated considerable international influence in multiple research areas.
