Within and Beyond Mathematics
Lecturer: Tian Gang
Professor Tian Gang, an internationally renowned mathematician, is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), a Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS), Vice-Chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League (CDL), Deputy Director of the University Council of Peking University, and Director of the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research (BICMR). He has been invited to present 45-minute and one-hour plenary addresses at the International Congress of Mathematicians. His notable accolades include the Waterman Award (U.S. National Science Foundation) and the Veblen Prize (American Mathematical Society).
Academician Tian Gang has made a series of significant contributions in the fields of complex geometry, geometric analysis, and mathematical physics. In particular, he has undertaken pioneering research in the study of Kähler-Einstein metrics, introduced the concept of K-stability, and was the first to prove the famous Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture. As one of the founding figures of Gromov-Witten invariant theory, he established a profound connection between self-dual Yang-Mills connections and scaling geometry, opening up multiple new research directions. He has held academic positions at several world-renowned institutions and has served as a member of the selection committee for the prestigious Abel Prize in the international mathematical community. He has also served as editor-in-chief and editorial board member of the internationally recognized top journals Annals of Mathematics and Journal of the American Mathematical Society.
