Molecular Basis and R&D Strategies for Epstein-Barr Virus Vaccines

Zeng Musheng, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), serves as the Deputy Director and Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, President of the International Association for Research on Epstein-Barr (EB) Virus and Associated Diseases, Director of Guangdong Provincial Engineering Research Center for Tumor Immunology and Vaccines, and Chair of the 2024 Gordon Research Conference on Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma. He is a Distinguished Professor of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program, a recipient of the honorary title of “Guangdong Hundred Outstanding Talents”, and a recipient of the 9th National Middle-Aged and Young Experts with Outstanding Contributions to Health. He has been awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and has led two National Key R&D Programs as well as several key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).
Professor Zeng has long focused on the carcinogenic mechanisms of EB virus and targeted intervention. He identified the universal receptor for EB virus infection for the first time, elucidated the mechanisms of EB virus infection and carcinogenesis, established an innovative vaccine system against EB virus, developed multiple candidate vaccines, and signed technology transfer agreements. As a corresponding or co-corresponding author, he has published more than 80 papers in leading international journals including Nature (2), Nature Microbiology (2), Cell Host & Microbe, Cell Research, Cancer Cell, Lancet Digital Health, PNAS and Journal of Clinical Investigation. He has received the following awards as the lead recipient: the Second Class Prize of the National Natural Science Award (2023), the First Class Prize of the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education (2022), the First Class Prize of the Natural Science Award of Guangdong Province (2018, 2023), and the First Class Prize of the Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (2019).
