Creative Endeavors for a Better Life in an Anxious Era

Lecturer: Wang Xiaofan

Wang Xiaofan is a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and an Internationally Renowned Cancer Biologist. He currently serves as the Donald and Elizabeth Cooke Chair Professor at Duke University. Born in May 1955 in Xinjiang, he obtained his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1986. He has made significant discoveries in multiple cancer-related fields, including cellular signal transduction, DNA damage and repair, and tumor microenvironment. He has conducted in-depth and systematic research on TGF-β and its downstream signaling pathways, identifying numerous key regulatory factors and related mechanisms. These include his recent findings on the molecular mechanism by which specific microRNA molecules and secreted proteins act as mediators in TGF-β signaling to

modulate the tumor microenvironment.

He has published over 130 research papers, including more than 20 in high-impact journals such as Cell, Nature, Science, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), with a total of more than 16,000 citations. He was elected as a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017. Also, he has served as Associate Editor of the internationally prestigious journal Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC) since 2006, and as President of the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America (SCBA) from 2012 to 2013.
