Lecturer: Dong Xinnian
Dong Xinnian is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS, USA) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM). She is an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biology at Duke University. She received her Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Wuhan University in 1982 and her Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Biology from Northwestern University in 1988. From 1988 to 1991, she conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School. Since 1992, she has served successively as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor in the Department of Biology at Duke University.
A pioneer in the field of molecular plant pathology, Professor Dong focuses her research on plant molecular biology and physiology, particularly the signaling pathways mediated by salicylic acid and jasmonic acid as well as their crosstalk mechanisms. As a corresponding author, she has published extensively in top international academic journals including Science, Nature, and Cell. She identified NPR1 as the key master regulator of plant immunity, and elucidated the mechanisms by which its immune signaling confers salicylic acid-mediated pathogen resistance and broad-spectrum disease resistance in rice. In 2011, she was appointed an HHMI Investigator; in the same year, she was elected a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2012 and to the American Academy of Microbiology in 2013.
