Efficient and Reliable Artificial Intelligence Research and Its Applications in 5G Networks

     Lecturer: LUO Zhiquan

Professor LUO Zhiquan, PhD Supervisor, Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, concurrently serves as the Vice President (Academic Affairs) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong(Shenzhen). He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Peking University in 1984 and his PhD in Operations Research from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT in 1989. In 1998, he became a tenured professor at McMaster University, Canada. From 2000 to 2003, he was on the faculty in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McMaster University where he served as the department head and was awarded a Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Information Processing. From 2003 to 2014, he was a tenured Professor in the ECE Department at the University of Minnesota, and an endowed ADC Chair Professor in Digital Technology.Since May 2014, he has served as the Presidential Chair Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. His research focuses on the optimal design of transceivers in wireless communication, robust adaptive beamforming for general-rank signal models, dynamic spectrum management, etc. He has published over 450 SCI indexed papers in academic journals, including IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE Communications Letters, and has been granted 10 national invention patents. He received the Best Paper Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2004, 2009, 2011 and 2015 respectively; the Best Paper Award from the International Conference on Communications in 2011; the Best Paper Award from EUSIPCO; the Farkas Prize from INFORMS in 2010; the Tseng Memorial Lectureship Prize from the International Society for Mathematical Optimization in 2018 and the First CSIAM Wangxuan Prize in 2022. In 2019, in cooperation with Huawei to address the challenge of optimizing 5G network performance, his team proposed the concept of Simulated Reality of Communication Networks (SRCON) that helped achieve major technological breakthroughs in data-driven 5G radio environments, user traffic patterns, spectral efficiency, base station mechanism modeling, and large-scale nonconvex stochastic optimization. The SRCON technology has been designated by Huawei as a “core technology” for 5G networks. Since 2020, it has been applied on a large scale in global 5G networks in China, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, South Korea and other countries, supporting Huawei's leading global 5G network performance.
