Collaborative Innovation in Industry–University–Research–Application Integration

Speaker: Zhu Ziqiang

      Professor Zhu Ziqiang is Chair Professor of Electrical Machines and Control Systems at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He spent 38 years at the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, where he led its internationally preeminent Electrical Machines and Drives Research Group from 2008 to 2025. The group enjoys a global reputation especially in the research and development of permanent-magnet machines and their systems. His research concentrates on the design and control of innovative permanent-magnet machines and drive systems. His work finds broad applications across electrified transportation (electric vehicles, high-speed railways, electric aircraft), wind power generation, domestic appliances, industrial drives, robotics, and automated devices and systems. Multiple research outputs from his group have been commercialized by world-leading industrial enterprises.

Professor Zhu is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK), Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (USA), IEEE Fellow, IET Fellow, Fellow of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, and Fellow of the China Electrotechnical Society. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of IET Electric Power Applications. His honours include the Global Energy Award (2024), the IEEE Nikola Tesla Award (2021), and the IEEE Industry Applications Society Outstanding Achievement Award (2019). To date, he has published over 1,600 academic papers, of which more than 650 appear in IEEE Transactions and IET Proceedings. His work has garnered more than 65,000 citations on Google Scholar, with an h-index of 129.
