From Rare Earth Giant to Rare Earth Leader: The Way Forward

Yan Chunhua is a Chair Professor at Peking University, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and a Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS). He earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from Peking University, where he started as a lecturer and was exceptionally promoted to Associate Professor and later to full Professor. He has previously served as Vice Dean of the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering at Peking University, Director of the Office of Natural Sciences, Associate Provost and Executive Vice Dean of the Graduate School, and Director of the Organization Department of the Party Committee. He also served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Nankai University, and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Lanzhou University. He has been a deputy to the 12th and 14th National People's Congress and a member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Professor Yan's research mainly focuses on rare earth separation and applications, as well as functional materials. He has twice received the Second Class Prize of the State Natural Science Award, and has won both the Second Class and Third Class Prizes of the State Science and Technology Progress Award. He is the recipient of the Outstanding Young Scholar Award from the Hong Kong Qiushi Science and Technology Foundation, the Chemistry Prize of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award, and the title of “National Most Beautiful Sci-Tech Worker.”
